Pup-date

Well it looks like Raven (for those of you too lazy to read the comments on the last post, that’s what I’m calling her) is starting to settle in with the big dogs.

After that first play session there were a few days of return to “no play” … because, encouraged by her success, Raven started trying to incite them into chasing her by acting increasingly obnoxious and innapropriate – trying to herd Jayda, flailing her little feet in Bryce’s face.. If I were them I would have flattened her right there and then (Tiffy or Sally would have done the same)! Instead, they went back to ignoring her. Apparently the strategy worked – she started being a little nicer and all 3 had some nice games of “chase” yesterday and this morning.

My cats still aren’t thrilled. She’s trying sooo hard not to chase them. The other morning she walked past Jasmine (“Good girl!”), walked past Kacey (“Good girl”!) … then she saw ‘Bika and that 3rd cat was just too much for her to resist!

Herding breeds !

I can also say that I’m starting to understand the “small dog syndrome” up close and personal. I went to the store last night to buy cat food and what should make its way into my shopping cart but a little hot pink collar. Did I NEED another collar? No, but I thought she’d look really cu-u-u-u-te in it :) !

This afternoon we’re heading out to a Puppy Agility Fundamentals class. I took the same class with Jayda a few years ago. Nothing I couldn’t be doing for free in my living room – flat work, teaching them to understand handling, tunnels and the chute, boards, a small table, and maybe a wide channel of weaves … but she sees quite enough of my living room and I want to get her used to going to classes. I hated their old flooring and I swore I was never going back there because of it, but they’ve changed to Comfort King since then which is supposedly very good to run on.

I’ll report tomorrow!

We have PLAY :) !!!

It finally happened – the puppy managed to coax cousin Jayda into playing with her!

She really had to work at it – poor girl’s been trying soooo hard to get someone, ANYONE to play with her. Bryce very sweetly ignores her, the cats (who are being UNUSUALLY tolerant) want nothing to do with her…

Finally this morning she bounced and yipped and play bowed and play bowed and play-bowed some more until Jayda couldn’t resist and gave her a little chase around the living room :) . Much-larger Jayda has a bit of an advantage in that she can (and does) run up on the sofa and the baby can’t – I was a little afraid she might LAND on the puppy en-route, but Jayda can also be surprisingly graceful (WHEN she’s paying attention).

Part Deux:

Having achieved success once, the baby tried even harder the next chance she got!

Play bow (subtle). Play bow (not so subtle). Play bow with your chin on the ground. Bark. Jump backwards. Jump backwards and bark. Jump forwards. Slap a paw on the ground. Run a few steps backwards. Back up, barking each step. Hop to the side. Play bow and bark. Play bow with your chin on the ground and bark. Hop to the other side. Bark and hop to the side. Playfully nibble at Jayda’s toes. Try nibbling the toes on another foot …

… all the while Jayda was standing there with this priceless expression on her face – observing, perplexed and a touch of horror as the awful realization dawned on her …

“OMIGOD – it NEVER STOPS!!!”

It was so funny – I couldn’t stop laughing at them!!!

… but eventually, Jayda was suckered into another game :) .

Honey, I Shrunk The Jayda!

(Gotta get my good camera fixed, but this was too funny not to post!)

Puppy and Jayda

Bryce and Jayda enjoyed a puppy-free weekend of agility last weekend at our first trial of the year – a CPE trial held indoors at our (heated) training building! Both of them did very well, Bryce qualifying in 8 out of 10 runs and Jayda qualifying in 3 out of 4, including matching 1st places in their respective Snooker classes. Jayda HATES Snooker, but she paid attention and was a very good girl. No new titles, but Bryce moved up to level 5 in two more classes and Jayda moved up to two more level 3 classes and actually up to level 4 in Colors!

(Jayda loves Colors :) ! )

Unfortunately neither managed to qualify in Jackpot so we’re still a little behind in that class.

Jayda was in quite a good mood all weekend and working well for me. She’s still a bit of a slowpoke, but she’s my very FAVORITE slowpoke :) ! I wish I’d entered her in more classes, but the trial opened before I’d made my appointment to spay her, so I only entered a few easy ones, not knowing if she’d be fully recovered by the trial.

My neighbors very graciously offered to watch the pup for me both days – along with their own 2 dogs, 5 cats and newborn baby boy! (Thanks again :) !!!) They said she was a quiet little angel – and I believe it, because as soon as I got her home and let her out of the crate she was WILD!!!

Settling in …

Well, we’ve survived week #1!

Housebreaking is going very well, though I feel like I’m constantly taking someone outside! The other night Cookie was in the kitchen with me and I saw her circling – I had just taken her out recently but thought “hmmm – that looks like a signal …”. Let her out of the kitchen and while I was getting my coat she ran to the front door and stood there, looking at it and looking at me. Sure enough – she had to go. Good girl!

My cats are being surprisingly tolerant – especially the Evil Kacey! In turn, she’s TRYING not to chase them … at least when I remind her. But its soooooo harrrrrrrrd … I see a lot of herding behaviors in her – I wouldn’t be comfortable with a really tiny sheltie on sheep, but perhaps a visit to meet some ducks is in her future.

Bryce is fine with her – but he pretty much ignores her. She wants to play with him sooooo bad and he won’t have any part of it! She reminds me a lot of him as a puppy – not exactly, but there are a lot of similarities. Not that surprising, she IS 3/8 “Timmy” (Bryce’s father). The funniest one? There’s this little turtle toy that she likes and a few times she’s almost taken it outside when she goes out to potty. If I put it in my pocket and give it to her after she does her business she proudly carries it all the way up my driveway, up the steps, onto the porch and back into the house.

Just like Uncle Bryce and his “Yucky Ducky”!

(I think she’s also going to have a hairy HEAD like her Uncle Brycey!)

Jayda still isn’t thrilled but she’s a lot less nervous than she was and is no longer snapping at the puppy just for breathing the same air. She will also let the puppy sniff her and will sniff the puppy. The back end that is -the bouncy, squeally front end’s still a little scary.

It’s a start!

Our Little Houseguest

Cookie on the porch

Meet our little houseguest, “Cookie” – if she looks familiar, she’s that yummy girl from the Christmas Puppy photo. She’s Bryce’s niece and just the cutest little thing! At 18 weeks she’s only 11″ tall and 8 3/4 lbs but quite sassy and full of herself. She has a lot of prey drive and likes to tug, pounce on and chase her toys.

She’s only been here since Thursday night – if things work out, she’ll be staying (and getting a new name). As of day #2, Bryce and the cats are coping but poor Jayda is most definitely NOT amused.

Cute Christmas Photo

Jayda’s breeder sent this to me the other day and I just had to share – is this TOO CUTE or what???!!!

Christmas puppy

She’s a Brycey niece – her father is his half-brother Ch. “Greyson”. Her mom is a Brycey grandniece – granddam is Bryce’s half-sister “Wendi” – a VCX sheltie (versatility title – an American and Canadian Ch. with titles in obedience, agility and herding) who’s also a full sister (from a different litter) to DKAGCH DKSPCH Toven the Full Monty (Danish agility champion ).

Enjoy! Maybe I’ll do some holiday pix of Bryce and Jayda this weekend but it will be hard to top this one!
