Getting our act together!

(Another old picture – our first trial of the season is the week the rest of the family will be at the FCI World Championships!) This week’s class went much better than last – it looks like Bryce and I are almost in synch again!

We were working mostly A-frame/tunnel discriminations and serpentines/threadles/270’s in both classes. The ease of getting most discriminations with Brycey never ceases to amaze me – as long as I give him the correct signal (hand up for contacts, hand low for tunnels) I don’t even need a verbal, he just does it! The only time we sometimes have problems is if I send him out and ahead to a tunnel on the far side of an a-frame and can’t keep my momentum as I send – I can’t stop “flatfooted” with him on a course. Ever!

Jayda was also doing well working her easier discriminations. We just had her doing the a-frame today, gradually moving the tunnel closer. She doesn’t totally understand the game yet, but she seems to be catching on.

Both dogs loved doing the threadle/serpentine exercises. The two dogs handle very differently – I have to turn into Jayda to check her stride, especially on the threadles. Bryce I can shoulder pull through the entire exercise – as long as I keep my eye on him and turn my shoulders accordingly we’ll go clean through that kind of sequence. Very few teams I know can get away with that strategy but it works for us :)!

Back to (agility) school!

Bryce and Jayda went back to class yesterday after a LONG break. Sorry, no new pictures (this one of Jayda is from a trial last Spring) – our training building is dark and besides I wouldn’t have taken my camera anywhere in the downpour we had yesterday!

They were both happy to be back! I was a little concerned about Bryce because he’s had some problems with his front on and off this year, but he seemed none the worse for wear (though he slept well the rest of the day). He was a bit of a goofball and we were both WAY out of synch – hopefully we’ll get our act back together before the first trials in a few weeks!

I was pleasantly surprised with Jayda – not only did she not “forget” anything over the 3-4 month break, she was making some VERY impressive weave pole entrances as if she’d been doing them for years and years! Other than a few tunnel-contact discriminations (which I *know* is her problem area) she didn’t make a single mistake the entire class!

Bryce is a good sport!

Cowboy BryceWhy did I embarass the poor boy like that?

I run a small pet costumes web site. Just for fun, each year I hold an annual Halloween Photo Contest where anyone can submit and vote on their favorite photos. The best photo each week gets featured on the home page, and at the end of the contest the most popular photos get bragging rights and are showcased on the site.

Last year we had quite a few entries and some amazingly creative costumes. One of my faves was a homemade school bus costume for a Corgi – it was absolutely PERFECT! Running the contest is a lot of work, but seeing the great pictures people send in makes it all worth while!!

Nobody wants to be first to submit a photo, so Bryce agreed to dress up (appropriately) as a cowboy to get the ball rolling this year.

So, if you or anyone you know has a great picture of your dog (or cat, or other pet) wearing a costume, come join in the fun! Rules and entry link are at BestDogCostumes.com!
